#23 Three little words that can change everything

Dec 01, 2021

I find words fascinating. The power they can have over our perspective, our thoughts and ultimately our actions.

Lately, I've been pondering the power of the questions we ask ourselves. In particular, the words we choose to start the question...

Oftentimes, questions that start with "why" keep us powerless and in the past. I realize there are many exceptions to this statement- but try this out with me. Here are several "why" questions that often come into our mind- when grappling with something with our horses- OR in other areas of life:

"Why did this happen?"

"Why are they acting like that?"

"Why me?"

Try reading the questions and pay attention to how it feels. The focus is outside yourself and can leave you without a plan for making things better.

Now try starting with 3 new words: "What can I" OR "How can I"

"What can I do differently next time?"

"How can I change things to improve this?"

"What can I learn from this?"

When you read those questions, do you feel a difference. It could be just me- but I do. My brain starts searching for solutions and I feel way more empowered.

Try it out, next time you're facing a situation you'd like to improve- play with starting your questions with "what can I" or "how can I".

Let me know what you discover.
